HC Deb 27 April 1914 vol 61 c1320
71. Mr. JAMES HOPE

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the growing cost of the Civil Service, the multiplicity of official appointments, and the legal qualifications possessed by officers in His Majesty's Army, he will favourably consider the extension to Great Britain of the practice whereby the duties of the magistracy are absorbed in those of a military command?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am not prepared to consider the suggestion, nor am I aware that the cost of the Civil Service in this country has any connection with the duties of the magistracy.

Mr. JAMES HOPE

Is the system working well in Ireland at the present time?
