HC Deb 23 April 1914 vol 61 c1093
40. Major WHITE

asked when the new classification of postmen will be taken in hand; and on what basis, whether of population, cost of living, or any other consideration, it is proposed to reclassify them?

Captain NORTON

The question of reclassifying provincial post offices for scales of pay of the outdoor force has been already taken in hand in accordance with the recommendations of the recent Select Committee, but, as was contemplated by the Committee, it may be some considerable time before the matter can be settled. All essential considerations will be taken into account in fixing the revised classification, but I am unable to make any definite statement at present.

Mr. SANDYS

Why is the Postmaster-General not here to answer these questions?

Mr. F. HALL (Dulwich)

Is the Postmaster-General prepared to agree to placing all the postmen in the area of the London County Council in one grade, instead of having several grades as at present?

Captain NORTON

No. He is not prepared to do that.
