HC Deb 21 April 1914 vol 61 cc729-30
4. Sir J. D. REES

asked whether a convoy of the Swedish gendarmerie was recently looted between Sultanabad and Kum; if so, whether the insecurity of roads leading from Southern to Northern Persia is prejudicing British business at Baghdad as well as on the shores of the Gulf, Manchester goods now being sent by parcel post through Russia in order to profit by the peace and order secured by that Government in Northern Persia; and whether the interests of British trade in the Shah's dominions are receiving the attention of His Majesty's Government?

Mr. ACLAND

I have received no official information in the sense of the first part of the question. His Majesty's Government are fully alive to the importance of restoring order and security on the southern roads in the interests of British trade and are giving every support to the Persian Government in their efforts in that direction. The answer to the third part is in the affirmative.
