HC Deb 20 April 1914 vol 61 cc568-9
21. Mr. DOUGLAS HALL

asked the Postmaster-General whether the Cowes Urban District Council has more than once protested against the action of the Post Office in putting unsightly telegraph and telephone poles on Egypt Hill, Cowes; and whether, in view of the fact that these wooden poles mar the landscape, he can see his way to substitute for them ornamental iron poles?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

I think it will be found that the painted wooden poles to be erected on Egypt Hill will present an appearance little if at all inferior to that of iron poles, which are three or four times as costly, besides being unsuitable from an engineering point of view. Specimen poles of each type are now set up on the vacant site of St. Martin's-le-Grand, and if it would interest the hon. Member to do so, I should be glad to arrange for him to inspect them.
