HC Deb 14 April 1914 vol 61 cc11-2
14. Mr. CHARLES BATHURST

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has abandoned his intention of filling the vacancy on the Development Commission caused by the resignation nine months ago of Sir Sainthill Eardley-Wilmot; and whether, in view of the admitted lack of practical agriculturists at present serving on the Commission and the consequent continuous criticisms directed against its policy by farmers' organisations throughout the country, he proposes, as promised last Session, to amend its constitution in this respect?

Mr. MONTAGU

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As the hon. Member is aware, the Government are prepared to accept his Bill now before the House providing for the appointment of two additional Commissioners if he can secure that it will be unopposed.

Mr. C. BATHURST

Do I understand that the Government are prepared to star my Bill?

Mr. MONTAGU

I cannot say more than that. I do not know whether the hon. Gentleman can give any assurance from the Opposition.
