HC Deb 08 April 1914 vol 60 cc1952-3
7. Mr. ANEURIN WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he can give any information as to the recent disturbance in Armenia?

Mr. ACLAND

I understand that disputes between the Turkish authorities and the Kurdish tribes in the Bitlis district recently culminated in open hostilities. The Government forces were unable to prevent the entry of the rebellious tribesmen into the town, but an official communiqué of the Turkish Government states that they have now been driven out. This report is confirmed by local missionaries. I understand no lives of Christians were lost. With regard to the position of the scheme of reform for the Armenian vilayets, on which I believe my hon. Friend also desires information, the position is practically the same as it was when my right hon. Friend made a statement on 18th March, and I have nothing to add to what he then said.
