HC Deb 02 April 1914 vol 60 c1348
74. Mr. F. HALL (Dulwich)

asked the Postmaster-General whether the marriage allowance of 3s. a week on reaching the age of twenty-five to postmen and others promoted to positions as telegraphists, sorters, etc., made in 1905, has since been discontinued; if so, will he state when the change was made, and under whose instructions and the reasons therefor; and whether any substituted allowance or payment was given in lieu of the grant of 3s., and the nature thereof?

The ASSISTANT POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Captain Norton)

The allowance which the hon. Member has in mind ceased automatically on the introduction in 1908 of the revised scales of pay recommended by the Parliamentary Committee on Post Office Servants which had reported in 1907. Those scales were considered at the time to provide adequate remuneration for the work to be performed. They have lately been revised by a further Committee.

Mr. F. HALL

May I ask if in 1905 this 3s. was not granted, and if, following the Hobhouse Report in 1908, this 3s. was not withdrawn and 8d. given in lieu thereof?

Captain NORTON

I must have notice of that question.

Mr. F. HALL

That is in the question.
