HC Deb 29 May 1913 vol 53 cc320-1
54. Mr. W. THORNE

asked the Home Secretary if he is aware that the three British officers who have been imprisoned in Germany for being spies have been granted a free pardon by the German Emperor; and if he has any intention of granting a free pardon to the German spies now in prison in this country?

56. Mr. KING

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that three British officers found guilty in Germany of espionage have been recently released; and whether, with the view of showing the national sense of this act of generosity and clemency, he will recommend a remission of the remainder of their sentences in the case of Germans now imprisoned in this country for espionage?

Mr. McKENNA

I will consult my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs on this matter. There is only one German now under sentence in this country for espionage.

Mr. KING

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that when this German was sentenced a number of the organs of public opinion commented upon the sentence as harsh and unfair?

Mr. McKENNA

No, Sir. I should not be able to concur with my hon. Friend's statement without looking up the particular reference.

Mr. KING

Will the right hon. Gentleman please look it up?
