HC Deb 06 May 1913 vol 52 cc1851-2
42. Mr. HUGH BARRIE

asked what was the revenue derived by the Corporation of Glasgow from the importation of cattle at Merklands during 1911; and what expenditure has taken place in the erection of lairages there since 30th September last?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I cannot give the information asked for in the first part of the question. I stated on Thursday last the amount of revenue from Merklands Wharf received by the Corporation of Glasgow during the financial year ended 31st May, 1912. No expenditure has yet been incurred for the erection of lairages at Merklands since the 30th September last.

Mr. WATT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that a loss of £25,000 in the last three years has been experienced by the Corporation of Glasgow in connection with these lairages, and does he think it right for his Department now, when a good time comes, to press them to take lower rates?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

An inquiry is going to be held into the whole question of Merklands Wharf, and I prefer to express no opinion until the inquiry has been finished.
