HC Deb 06 May 1913 vol 52 cc1847-8
55. Mr. KEIR HARDIE

asked the hon. Member for St. George's-in-the-East, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether the fixed oak settles were placed in the lower waiting hall by his authority; whether he is aware that their presence is generally regarded by Members of the House as an offence against the architectural design of the hall; and whether any effective opportunity will be given for ascertaining the opinion of the House, either by an open vote on the Estimate or by a plebiscite of Members, on the question of their removal?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN (Lord of the Treasury)

The settees were placed in the Lower Waiting Hall by the First Commissioner's authority. The Report of the Vote for the Houses of Parliament buildings would be the proper occasion to criticise them. The First Commissioner is always glad to receive suggestions from Members of the House.

Mr. KEIR HARDIE

When the Vote comes on will the House be left free to express its opinion?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN

What will happen when the Vote comes on is not a question which I can answer.

Mr. KING

Has the Vote for this matter already passed?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN

Committee stage, not Report.
