HC Deb 24 June 1913 vol 54 cc949-50
6. Sir J. D. REES

asked whether any steps are being taken by the Government of India to abate the excessive number of dacoities now occurring in the Bengal Presidency, and more particularly in the neighbourhood of Calcutta; and why so little success has attended the efforts hitherto made to bring to justice the offenders?

Mr. MONTAGU

The Bengal Government are steadily pursuing measures to strengthen and improve the numbers, organisation, and personnel of their police. The physical difficulties presented by a country intersected with waterways are considerable, but it is hoped that the steps that are being taken to provide more efficient protection for isolated villages will ensure a more energetic co-operation with the authorities on the part of the inhabitants.
