§ 38. Sir JOHN LONSDALEasked whether, having regard to the representations of chambers of commerce and public bodies in Ireland, he will endeavour to prevail upon the railway companies to defer bringing into operation the increased charges of which Notice has been given from the 1st July to the 1st October next?
Mr. BUXTONThe railway companies have given the notice required by law of their intention to make the proposed increases, and I do not see that any useful purpose would be served by my suggesting a postponement. Under the Act of 1894 a trader can complain at any time after a rate has been increased. As regards the Great Southern and Western Company, they have to obtain the sanction of the Railway and Canal Commission before increasing their rates, and the Commission fix a time during which objections must be lodged.
