asked the President of the Board of Education whether he will state the numbers of elementary school children in non-provided and council schools in Wales; and whether, since 1903, there has been a decrease or increase of registered children in either class of schools?

The number of children on the books of the public elementary schools of Wales (including Monmouthshire) in the years 1902–3 and 1911–12 (the last year for which complete returns are available), respectively, was as follows:—

asked the number of Church schools in Wales which have been transferred or closed since 1903, and the number of the increase of council schools in the same period?

Mr. PEASE

Since 1903 forty-four Church of England public elementary schools in Wales and Monmouthshire have been transferred to local education authorities and fifty-one such schools have been closed. In the same period the number of council schools has increased by 271.
