Westminster Hospital Bill,

Sir Henry Craik had given notice of the following Motion: "That it be an Instruction to the Committee on the Westminster Hospital Bill, to consider whether it is expedient, in dealing with the present site of the hospital, to widen the street leading to the Houses of Parliament by making the frontage level with the neighbouring building, and so providing, in the public interest and for posterity, an access worthy of the dignity of the situation."

An HON. MEMBER

I object.

Sir H. CRAIK

I would appeal to the Chairman of Committees upon this matter, which is one of considerable public interest. There are various rumours with regard to a settlement, and in deference to the House and to the public interests involved, a statement ought to be made one way or the other. I appeal to the Chairman of Committees to give some time for this Motion.

The CHAIRMAN of COMMITTEES (Mr. Whitley)

I understood that objection had been taken. It does not lie in my province to make any statement upon the matter.

Sir H. CRAIK

Would it not be possible for the right hon. Gentleman to give an opportunity for discussion at 8.15?

Mr. WHITLEY

indicated dissent.

Resolution deferred.

Read a second time, and committed.
