Mr. PETOasked the Secretary to the Treasury whether an application has been received by the Development Commissioners from the executive of the Ship 784 Canal National Association for Glasgow and the West for a Grant of £3,000 to defray the expenses of employing civil engineers to make surveys and prepare estimates of the cost of constructing a direct sea-level canal between the Clyde and the Forth; and whether this Grant will be made from the Development Fund?
§ Mr. MASTERMANAn application of this nature wars received by the Treasury a few days ago, and has been forwarded to the Scottish Office for transmission to the Development Commission, in accordance with the provisions of the Development and Road Improvement Funds Act. Until the Commissioners have reported to the Treasury, I am unable to say whether the application will be granted.
