HC Deb 29 July 1913 vol 56 cc283-4
36. Mr. F. HALL

asked what practical training in the construction of stage carriages is received by the police officers to whom is entrusted the inspection of Metropolitan stage carriages; and if the training is of a nature to qualify them to express an opinion as to the causes of accidents arising from defects in design or materials?

Mr. McKENNA

No police officer is appointed to the branch at Scotland Yard, which deals with public carriages, until he satisfies the Commissioner of Police that he is fully competent to deal with all the practical part of his work, including that arising from accidents, however caused.

Mr. F. HALL

What is the practical training which these officers have in view of the holding up, sometimes for two or three hours, of the tramways of the London County Council?

Mr. McKENNA

It is a practical training in machinery, motor machinery particularly, and most of them hold a certificate of knowledge in that particular kind of work.
