HC Deb 23 January 1913 vol 47 cc609-10
32. Mr. CRUMLEY

asked the Vice-President of the Department of Agriculture (Ireland) whether he is aware that 162 cattle, the property of Mr. Thomas Rutherford, were recently held up by the authorities in Derry for one week before they were allowed to be shipped to Scotland; what was the cause of the delay; and if he will take steps to prevent a recurrence of such loss and inconvenience to cattle exporters in future?

Mr. BIRRELL

The cause of the detention of the cattle in the case referred to is not within the control of the Department. The animals have had to be kept back from shipment through lack of accommodation for their reception at the landing place in Scotland. As accommodation becomes available they are being allowed to proceed. Twenty-five of them were shipped on Monday last and sixty-five on Tuesday. The Department will communicate with the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries with a view to an extension of the accommodation.
