HC Deb 23 January 1913 vol 47 c583
1. Mr. KING

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can now make a further statement on the case of Mr. Hughes, who is awaiting trial on a charge by the Columbian Government?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir E. Grey)

His Majesty's Minister at Bogota has made further representations, and a Memorandum was presented to the Columbian Chargé d'Affaires in this country, calling attention in particular to the treatment of Senor Pinilles, Mr. Hughes' lawyer. The Columbian Chargé d'Affaires was informed that His Majesty's Government considered that the proceedings, which should never have been instituted, should be dropped. The reply of the Columbian Government is not satisfactory, and will form the subject of further representations on the part of His Majesty's Government.

Mr. KING

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how long this Gentleman was in prison and how long he has been on remand?

Sir E. GREY

I must ask for notice of that question.
