HC Deb 01 January 1913 vol 46 cc335-6
11. Mr. TOUCHE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any rupees for circulation in East Africa are coined in that Colony or in England or are they all coined in India; and how is the profit on coinage dealt with?

Mr. HARCOURT

None are coined in East Africa or in England. As stated by the Under-Secretary of State for India on the 9th October, in reply to the hon. Member for Hertford, rupees are coined in India to meet the requirements of that country and not directly for exportation, but the Indian rupee circulates in parts of East Africa and passes, in the course of trade, from India to those countries and from them to India. The profit on coinage is dealt with by the Indian Government.

Mr. TOUCHE

Does East Africa get any part of the profit?

Mr. HARCOURT

No.

Mr. TOUCHE

Does it go to the gold standard reserve in India?

Mr. HARCOURT

East Africa gets no part of the profit.
