Crawford, the treasurer and chairman of the Johannesburg Socialist party, who were arrested for alleged participation in the recent rioting in Johan- 1264 nesburg, are being tried privately in the fort, which is the common gaol of Johannesburg, and not in the Law Courts; and whether, if so, he can make any representations to the South African Government through Lord Gladstone on the subject of the rights of British citizens to an open trial?
