HC Deb 31 October 1912 vol 43 c567
75. Mr. BARNES

asked if the question of the definition of areas for giving effect to the Fair-Wages Clause in Government contracts has been settled; and, if so, can he state the extent of the London area in terms of miles from Charing Cross?

Mr. BUXTON

I am not aware that any general question of defining areas in relation to the Fair-Wages Clause has arisen, but if my hon. Friend has a definite case in mind and will give me particulars I will cause inquiry, to be made. At the same time, I would remind him that the interpretation of the Fair-Wages Clause does not rest with the Board of Trade, but with the contracting Departments. These Departments may, if they desire, obtain the advice of the Fair-Wages Advisory Committee.

Mr. BARNES

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Admiralty have decided that Hammersmith is not a part of London, and does he not think it is time the Advisory Committee or some other Committee advised the Admiralty as to a proper interpretation of the Fair-Wages Clause?

Mr. BUXTON

I have no official information in regard to that point, and the hon. Member should put his question to the Board of Admiralty.

Mr. CROOKS

May we be allowed to send a map of the country to the Advisory Committee?
