HC Deb 23 October 1912 vol 42 c2331

Lords Amendment considered.

In Clause 9 (Inspection of traps): Leave out the words "between sunrise and sunset"—["every day between sunrise and sunset."]

Motion made, and Question proposed, "That this House doth agree with the House of Lords in the said Amendment."

Sir HILDRED CARLILE

I think we ought to have some explanation as to the meaning of this Amendment.

Dr. CHAPPLE

The Bill as it left the House of Commons contained the provision that traps set for hares and rabbits should be visited between "sunrise and sunset." Lord Balfour of Burleigh moved an Amendment to leave out the words "between sunrise and sunset," because in winter the days in Scotland are short, the light sometimes having disappeared about half-past three in the afternoon, and it would be unreasonable that the traps should be inspected between sunrise and sunset. As long as they were inspected during the day would be sufficient.
