HC Deb 23 October 1912 vol 42 cc2191-2
37. Lord H. CAVENDISH-BENTINCK

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the manner in which the National Insurance Act is working among the Nottingham outworkers, he will instruct Mr. Pope, the official Commissioner, not only to inquire into the position of married women under the Act, but to take into consideration the advisability of amending the Act so as to secure its smoother working?

Mr. MASTERMAN

Mr. Pope has been appointed as an impartial person to conduct a special inquiry in accordance with the provisions of the Ninth Schedule to the National Insurance Act. The scope of such an inquiry necessarily depends on the formal objections that have been submitted. The Commissioners will, however, take full advantage of the information elicited by Mr. Pope, and of his advice, in considering any wider policy with regard to outworkers.
