HC Deb 23 October 1912 vol 42 c2165
8. Mr. CHARLES BATHURST

asked whether, as the result of his promised inquiry, he can say whether the, Danish Government are now making a subsidy to the Union Steamship Company for the conveyance of agricultural produce to this country; what is the amount, if any, of such subsidy; and what the Union Company actually give in return in the way of facilities or encouragement to Danish export trade?

Mr. ACLAND

I communicated the result of the inquiry to which reference is made, to the hon. Member by letter on the 21st of April last year. As the information I obtained involves a considerable number of figures, I will circulate it with the Votes. As regards the inquiry conveyed in the latter portion of the question, T understand that, in addition to the facilities afforded by the United Steamship Company in the shape of regular tri-weekly services to British ports, proper cooling machinery on board the vessels employed, etc., the actual freight rates charged for the conveyance of agricultural produce to the United Kingdom have to be submitted to the Danish Minister of Agriculture, and to be approved of by him.
