HC Deb 17 October 1912 vol 42 cc1411-2
56. Colonel YATE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether, considering the work and expense that has been incurred by officers in British regiments in India in order to qualify themselves, by passing examinations in Indian languages, for appointment to the Indian Army, and the disappointment that has been occasioned to those who have successfully passed these examinations by the present stoppage of transfers from British units in India to the Indian Army, special consideration may be given to officers who have thus qualified and who may lose their chance of transfer, under the age clause or other conditions, before transfers are resumed?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. Harold Baker)

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to the hon. Member for East Nottingham on the 11th inst. The Secretary of State for India is of opinion that no special consideration is called for. The officers in question have always taken the risks of failing to obtain transfers to the Indian Army.
