HC Deb 16 October 1912 vol 42 cc1218-9
43. Captain FABER

asked whether the right hon Gentleman's attention has been called to the remarks of the stipendiary magistrate of Cardiff, Mr. Lewis, that during the year 1906 a freeboard of seven feet six inches had been allowed to the foundered collier "North Briton," whereby twenty lives were lost, whereas previously the freeboard had been seven feet eleven and a half inches, and that this had proved a fatal encroachment, and that their lives had been forfeited to the extra 130 tons; and whether he will consider the desirability of returning to the old freeboard?

Mr. BUXTON

My hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade answered a somewhat similar question on Wednesday last, and I am sending to the hon. Member a copy of the answer.

Mr. CATHCART WASON

Will the right hon. Gentleman take an opportunity of publishing with the Votes actually what has been done with reference to this question of the freeboard?

Mr. BUXTON

I must have notice of that question.
