HC Deb 07 October 1912 vol 42 c22
11. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Secretary for the Colonies whether he can give the House any further information regarding the failure of the crops last season in Nyasaland?

Mr. HARCOURT

I have within the last few days received the following account from the Governor by telegraph. The severe shortage due to the failure of crops is confined to the Port Herald district. In this district the Government puts grain on sale to ablebodied natives, and where necessary makes a free issue to old and infirm people. In other parts of the Protectorate, where there seemed a probability of shortage, the Government has, established district granaries stocked from the parts of the country where grain can be spared. The grain thus stored is available for sale and distribution as in the Port Herald district. The Governor considers that these arrangements will be adequate if the rainy season, due to commence next month, proves to be normal.
