HC Deb 25 November 1912 vol 44 c801
34. Mr. FIENNES

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether, in view of the fact that five children have died at a branch of the Walworth crêche, he will consider the advisability of appointing a public inspector of crêches?

Mr. McKENNA

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply to this question. As criminal proceedings are being taken in the case of a home for children at Tooting, to which my lion. Friend probably refers, the facts are now sub judice. The premises in question were a residential home, under inspection by the London County Council. The crêche at Walworth is not in any way involved in these proceedings, and I have no reason to think there is any need for the inspection of crêches where children are left only for the day and taken home by their parents at night.
