§ 95. Mr. BARNESasked the Postmaster-General if he is aware of the amount of overtime being worked at the head office of the Telephone Department, Queen Victoria Street, by the clerks of such Department; and if he will state the reasons for such overtime and, if possible, have it stopped?
§ Mr. HERBERT SAMUELI am aware that a large amount of overtime is being worked by the clerks in the London telephone service owing to increase of work and changes of system consequent on the absorption of the National Telephone Company's service. I have already sanctioned the employment of additional force, which will be taken on as soon as possible. The question of a general revision is receiving attention.
§ Mr. BARNESMay I ask the right hon. Gentleman if this overtime has been voluntary on the part of the individuals employed?
§ Mr. HERBERT SAMUELOvertime is compulsory in the Post Office service; but, as a rule, volunteers are forthcoming. My information in this particular case is that the overtime was worked by volunteers.
