HC Deb 25 November 1912 vol 44 cc813-4
53. Mr. KING

asked the Prime Minister whether he has taken note of the feeling existing against the proposal to erect the new buildings of the new Delhi in the Italian Renaissance style and of the opinion that a native Indian style should be adopted; and whether he will assure the House that no decision will be taken to build the new Delhi in the Italian style until the full proposals of the Government of India have been pubished and the House allowed an opportunity of considering them, or at least until the proposals have been placed before the public for criticism or approval?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. Harold Baker)

I am not aware that any such proposal as is mentioned by the hon. Member is before the Government of India. No decision as to the style of architecture to be employed has been reached. The Secretary of State is unable to give the further assurance asked for.
