HC Deb 25 November 1912 vol 44 cc793-4
14. Mr. KING

asked the hon. Member for St. George's-in-the-East, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether the Egyptian obelisk standing on the Thames Embankment, and vulgarly known as Cleopatra's Needle, is maintained by the Office of Works; whether the stone shows any signs of decay as the effect of the London atmosphere and climate; and whether any steps are being taken to preserve from gradual destruction this monument?

Mr. WEDGWOOD BENN (Lord of the Treasury)

The obelisk known as Cleopatra's Needle is in the charge of the London County Council and not of the First Commissioner of Works.
