HC Deb 21 November 1912 vol 44 c462
28. Mr. NEWMAN

asked the Chief Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to a meeting recently held by the United Irish League at Ardagh, county Mayo, as reported in the "Western People" of the 9th instant, at which the speaker assured his audience that the Irish Parliamentary party were winning their way through troubled waters, and were now sure of planting the green flag instead of the pirate and blood-stained flag of England; whether a Government note-taker was present at this and similar meetings of the United Irish League that have been recently held in the county of Mayo; and whether he intends to take attraction in the matter?

Mr. BIRRELL

I have seen a newspaper report of the meeting referred to, and I am informed by some members of the police force who were present, that the language quoted in the question although published in the newspaper was not used by any of the speakers at the meeting. No Government note-taker was present at the meeting.

Mr. ALAN SYKES

Will the Irish Parliament have power when assembled in Dublin to fly any other flag but the Union Jack?
