HC Deb 21 November 1912 vol 44 c489
Mr. MITCHELL-THOMSON

I wish to ask the Secretary for the Colonies a question, of which I have given him private notice, namely; Whether he can give the House any information as to the disasters which are reported to have occurred in Jamaica, and especially as to the state of things in Savanna la Mar?

Mr. HARCOURT

I regret to say there has been a disaster in Jamaica. I hope it will prove, when we get further news, to be less severe than was indicated in some Press reports. I have received the following telegram from the Governor of Jamaica:— Nine days' heavy rains and winds culminating in very severe storm near west end of island, Great destruction of cottages and plantations and some loss of life reported there. Means of communication not restored yet) fully. I am proceeding west end to-day. Damage to crops serious throughout island, but rains advantageous. I will keep the House informed of any further news I receive.
