HC Deb 21 November 1912 vol 44 cc473-4
61. Mr. LLOYD

asked whether any representation has been received from the local authority as to the need for new and adequate post office accommodation at Cannock?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I have received representations on this subject, and I am at present having inquiry made.

Mr. LLOYD

Will the right hon. Gentleman consult the local authority with regard to the necessary alteration?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

The usual course will be followed.

62. Mr. LLOYD

asked whether the staff at Cannock post office has been depleted since the 9th September, and, as a consequence, continuous overtime has had to be worked by the present staff; and whether the delay in filling up the staff is due to the fact that the conditions of employment and the remuneration are less favourable at Cannock than at similar offices in the country?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

A place for a female assistant became vacant on the 6th October, and since that date the duty has been covered by overtime, as explained in my reply to the hon. Member on the 24th October. The delay in filling the vacancy is not due to any difference in pay and conditions of employment at Cannock as compared with other offices of the same class, but to the fact that the candidate who was first selected as having a special claim to the post subsequently declined to leave the place where she is now stationed. There are other suitable candidates, and I hope that the appointment will be filled very shortly.
