HC Deb 20 November 1912 vol 44 cc284-5
39. Mr. OUTHWAITE

asked if the right hon. Gentleman has any information regarding the operation of the Land Values Tax imposed by the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, which would suggest the advisability of hastening the completion of the valuation of the land of the United Kingdom for the purposes of land reform?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I have full information from Australia as to the operation of the tax referred to. I find that as a result estates to the value of £21,000,000 were cut up from the 1st July, 1910, to the 30th June, 1911, and that the amount of land under cultivation increased by over 2,000,000 acres in a year and a-half from the time when the tax was first levied. My hon. Friend may rest assured that I fully appreciate the importance of completing the valuation of the land of the United Kingdom at the earliest possible date.

Mr. NEWMAN

Will the right hon. Gentleman say if the Land Tax, the Inhabited House Duty, the Property Tax, and the Super-tax are levied on real estate in Australia?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

I cannot answer a question of that sort.
