HC Deb 12 November 1912 vol 43 c1797
33. Mr. FREDERICK WHYTE

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he can give the hours worked by warders in Scottish prisons, showing the length of the average working day for those on day duty and on night duty; whether any change has recently been made in these arrangements; if so, at what date such changes were made effective, and what was the nature of these changes, if any; and whether the Regulations regarding hours, wages, and conditions of service are uniform for all Scottish prisons?

The SECRETARY for SCOTLAND (Mr. McKinnon Wood)

The average working day of prison warders in Scottish prisons is now nine hours (in winter about 8½). The hours on night duty do not exceed nine. A reduction and consequent rearrangement of hours was sanctioned at the commencement of the current financial year, but could not be made universally effective until the necessary additional staff had been appointed. This was done by the end of July at all prisons. With the exception of certain extra allowances at Peterhead Convict Prison, the State Inebriate Reformatory and the Criminal Lunatic Department, the hours, wages and conditions of service are uniform for all Scottish Prisons.
