HC Deb 21 May 1912 vol 38 c1745
Mr. JOWETT

asked the President of the Board of Education if he is aware that school caretakers employed by local education committees are in many cases paid low wages, out of which they are required to provide paid assistance, and that when this has been done and all other charges have been met, as, for instance, full or part cost of cleaning materials, the balance of net wages is in some cases as low as 2d. per hour, or even less,. for a seventy-two hours' working week; and if he will make it a condition for the receipt of State Grant by a local education committee that these sweating conditions shall be put an end to where they now exist?

Mr. J. A. PEASE

I am not in any way responsible for the conditions and terms of employment of school caretakers, and I have no knowledge of the facts referred to in the first part of the question. The matter is one for the local education authorities and the ratepayers whom they represent, and I have no power to intervene.
