HC Deb 16 May 1912 vol 38 c1283
Mr. ROWNTREE

asked whether any steps are being taken by the Insurance Commissioners to draw up tables of alternative benefits, such as superannuation allowance, which might be offered by women's friendly societies in lieu of sickness benefit?

Mr. MASTERMAN

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave on 1st May to my hon. Friend the Member for West Leeds. The Commissioners are placed by the Act in a judicial capacity to confirm or reject schemes of alternative benefits submitted by societies having regard to the special circumstances of the members, or classes of members, affected. They cannot, therefore, with propriety issue such schemes themselves. They will very shortly, however, have made available for all societies the material necessary for the actuarial calculations required to frame such schemes.
