HC Deb 16 May 1912 vol 38 cc1264-5
Mr. MOORE

asked if the right hon. Gentleman is aware that the Irish model schools have been frequently condemned by the heads of the Roman Catholic Church; if he is aware that their teachers are Protestants who obtained their positions by open competitive examination until a few years ago; if it is intended to permit the Irish Parliament to abolish these schools; and will he state what safeguards will be provided for these teachers under the Government proposals should they become law?

Mr. BIRRELL

It is true that the model schools have been disapproved by the Roman Catholic bishops, and that the teachers and pupils are for the most part Protestants. There is nothing in the Bill now before Parliament to prevent the Irish Parliament dealing with these schools. Such of the teachers as are Civil servants will be entitled to the benefits of Clause 33 of the Bill.

Mr. MOORE

Will any safeguards be provided for these Protestants as a minority?

Mr. BIRRELL

I do not know whether the hon. and learned Member can suggest any further safeguards.

Mr. MOORE

Yes, make them a reserved service.
