§ Mr. WHITEHOUSEMay I ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs a question of which I have given him private notice: Whether he has any information as to whether the carrying out of the sentence on Miss Malecka will be deferred if she decides to appeal, pending the decision of the appeal?
§ Sir E. GREYI understand there is a right of appeal, and that if that right is exercised then, pending the decision of the appeal, the sentence will not be carried into effect, though I assume Miss Malecka will be detained in prison, where she is at the present moment.
§ Mr. MORRELLWill the right hon. Gentleman be prepared to ask for her release on bail, pending the decision of the appeal?
§ Sir E. GREYIt is quite impossible for me to say anything further until I have got a full report of the trial. She was released on bail originally. The trial was public, and I expect a full report very soon, but until that report is received it is impossible for me to say anything more.
§ Mr. MORRELLMay we take it the right hon. Gentleman is now satisfied Miss Malecka is a British subject, and that the Russian Government admits she is a British subject?
§ Sir E. GREYThere is a question put down for Thursday on that point. As the hon. Member knows, from statements I have previously made, it is a very complicated point, and I should like to know whether anything has come out at the trial which leads me to modify anything I have said previously. I would rather defer it to Thursday.
