HC Deb 14 May 1912 vol 38 c946
Mr. ASHLEY

asked what steps were being taken to strengthen the garrisons at Gibraltar, Malta, and in Egypt?

Sir REGINALD POLE-CAREW

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he was aware that it was proposed to move the base of the Mediterranean Fleet from Malta to Gibraltar; whether the garrisons of Malta, Cyprus, and Egypt would in consequence be increased; and, if so, by how many men and guns respectively?

Colonel SEELY

I am not in a position to make a statement on the subject.

Mr. ASHLEY

May we take it from that reply that steps are being taken in the direction indicated?

Colonel SEELY

I say that I am not in a position to make any statement. I think it would be very undesirable to make a statement.

Mr. ASHLEY

But is anything being done?

Colonel SEELY

I have said very distinctly that I am not in a position to make a statement.
