HC Deb 13 May 1912 vol 38 cc784-5
Mr. EDWARD WOOD

asked the Postmaster-General whether he has received representations on behalf of the inhabitants of Winksley, near Ripon, urging the establishment of a post office in the village of Winksley, to which he has been unable to assent; and whether, in view of the inconvenience resulting from the present arrangements, he can see his way to reconsider his decision?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Herbert Samuel)

I have received the application, but I regret that I do not see my way to comply with it. The existing postal service in the locality is already maintained at a loss.

Mr. EDWARD WOOD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the nearest post office is not within a distance of a mile, but is a distance of three miles?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

It is an exceedingly small place, and there would be very heavy loss if we had a post office in every hamlet.
