HC Deb 13 May 1912 vol 38 c782
Mr. JOHN WARD

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the action of Messrs. Garretts, of Leiston, Suffolk, in dismissing workmen from their work, and giving such workmen notices to leave their houses, unless they will agree to resign their membership in a trade union; whether the same firm have also intimidated their workpeople from dealing with certain traders in the district, and threatened others with boycotting if they continue to deal with persons against which Messrs. Garrett have a grudge; and whether his Department intends to take any action to protect the workpeople of that district against the threats of that firm and prevent these open acts of intimidation?

Mr. McKENNA

I have no information on this particular case. The Truck Acts prohibit an employer from imposing as a condition of employment any terms as to the place at which wages are to be expended or dismissing any workman on account of the place at which the workman has expended his wages; and if my hon. Friend is in possession of any facts which point to an infraction of this provision, and will communicate them to me, I will have inquiry made.
