HC Deb 28 March 1912 vol 36 c574
Mr. FELL

asked if there was any Treaty existing between this country and Portugal under which this country is under any obligation to protect or guarantee the Portuguese colonies of San Thomé and Principé; and, if so, whether this Treaty involves this country in any consequent obligation or responsibility in regard to the black labour imported into those islands?

Sir E. GREY

The Treaty of 1906, which is still in force, binds this country to defend and protect all conquests or colonies belonging to Portugal against all her enemies. The answer to the second part of the question is in the negative. There are provisions respecting slavery in other engagements, but not in the Treaty in question.

Mr. FELL

Does the Treaty of 1908 in any way affect this?

Sir E. GREY

I am not sure to which Treaty the hon. Member refers, but, perhaps, he will give me notice.
