HC Deb 28 March 1912 vol 36 cc604-5
Mr. KING

asked whether an annual payment of £100 has been approved for the Wesleyan minister at Princetown, Devon; whether this payment marks a new departure in policy; and, if so, what grounds can be urged for it^

Mr. McKENNA

Having regard to the isolated position of Dartmoor prison and the difficulty of providing a regular Wesleyan service for the number of officers and their families as well as prisoners who are Wesleyans, arrangements have been made with the authorities of the Wesleyan Church whereby the services of a resident Wesleyan minister in Princetown will be secured in consideration of the payment of £100 towards the expenses entailed. This is not a new departure in policy. An analogous Grant has been made for many years at Princetown, and on the same grounds, towards the expenses of ministering to the officers and their families belonging to the Church of England.

Mr. KING

May we take it that there is no intention to go in for a policy of concurrent endowment?

Mr. McKENNA

None whatever.
