HC Deb 11 March 1912 vol 35 c811
Mr. HUNT

asked whether, in view of the fact that the Tarbrax colliery buildings were wrecked on Wednesday, the 6th of this month, and the men stopped from working, and in view of the sufferings of men, women, and children certain to be caused by the continuance of the coal strike, the Government will publicly promise adequate protection to men willing to work in the mines?

The PRIME MINISTER

The responsibility for giving protection rests in the first instance with the local authorities, but the Government, should the need arise, will afford them all necessary assistance.

Mr. HUNT

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether men are not to be prevented from breaking heads when women have such strong measures taken against them to prevent them from breaking windows?

The PRIME MINISTER

The same law will be applied to both.

Mr. HUNT

Will the right hon. Gentleman promise to make that law and apply it?

The PRIME MINISTER

The occasion has not yet arisen.
