HC Deb 20 June 1912 vol 39 cc1849-50
61. Mr. NEWDEGATE

asked whether the Postmaster-General is now in a position to make arrangements that the postmen of Erdington and Sutton Coldfield shall receive the same rate of remuneration as those of Aston and other adjoining districts?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

As I explained to the hon. Member on the 27th February last, I am not in a position to revise the classification of these offices pending the Report of the Select Committee now sitting.

Mr. NEWDEGATE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when the Report will be submitted to the House?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

I cannot say. That matter rests entirely in the hands of the Committee.

Mr. NEWDEGATE

Does it mean that some months, perhaps a year, may elapse before it is submitted, and that in the meantime these postmen will be receiving less pay than persons living in the immediate neighbourhood under the same conditions at the present time?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

There is a great number of questions of classification all over the country where representations are made that one office is unfairly treated compared with another in the same district. All these matters are being subjected to inquiry by a Committee of the House, and I cannot deal with the subject piecemeal.
