HC Deb 20 June 1912 vol 39 cc1853-4
Mr. KEIR HARDIE

I desire to ask the Prime Minister a question, of which I have given him private notice, namely: What action, if any, has been or is to be taken by the Government to ascertain the opinion of the working classes of the city of Cardiff on the proposal to proclaim Wednesday next a Bank Holiday; and, if they are not to be consulted, are they to be paid wages for that day?

The PRIME MINISTER

I have received the notice only since coming into the House. I do not know how far it would be possible to make the inquiry referred to. If the hon. Member will put down a question for Monday, I will inquire in the meantime.

Mr. KEIR HARDIE

Is it not the case that the council which is to issue the proclamation is to meet on Monday? That is the reason I have thought the matter urgent and put the question on Private Notice.

The PRIME MINISTER

I will look into the matter.

Mr. KEIR HARDIE

Will the Prime Minister see if he can issue an Order that a man who is forced against his will to take a holiday on Wednesday shall have a right to recover his wages?

The PRIME MINISTER

I do not think that the proclamation of a Bank Holiday necessarily involves the closing of business premises.
