HC Deb 20 June 1912 vol 39 c1843
58. Mr. LARDNER

asked if the Postmaster-General will state how many Civil servants in the employ of the Post Office in Ireland have undertaken the administration of Part II. of the National Insurance Act; what the remuneration of these officers has been fixed at; out of what fund will it be paid, and on what Vote can the matter be discussed; and will he state if these Post Office officials were appointed by the Board of Trade as the result of applications for appointment made by these officers in response to the advertisement issued by the Board of Trade relative to the appointment of local agents or were they appointed on the nomination of the Post Office authorities?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

At the request of the Board of Trade eighty-three postmasters and salaried sub-postmasters have been nominated by me to act as local agents for unemployment insurance work in Ireland. The question of the remuneration to be paid for the new work has not yet been settled; it will in any case fall on the Post Office Vote.

67. Mr. HAYDEN

asked whether the Secretary to the Treasury will state the circumstances under which selections are made from applicants in Ireland for examinations for positions under the Insurance Commissioners in that country; and upon what principle some are admitted and others equally qualified are rejected?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Masterman)

The recommendations in paragraphs 22 and 23 of the Report of the Interdepartmental Committee on Outdoor Staff (Cd. 6231) are being adopted by the Irish Commission. I am not aware of any ground for the suggestion in the last part of the question.
