HC Deb 19 June 1912 vol 39 cc1670-1
65. Mr. O'DONNELL

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether, seeing the public demand for the teaching of Irish in national schools and the neglect of the training colleges to have this subject properly taught to students while in training, he will secure, a Grant for the payment of the expenses of teachers who attend Irish summer schools, as is done in the case of teachers- who attend summer courses in other subjects?

Mr. BIRRELL

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the question asked on this subject by the hon. Member for the Connemara Division on 14th May.

Mr. O'DONNELL

Seeing that nearly 200,000 children are now learning Irish in schools in Ireland does the right hon. Gentleman think that the training colleges in Ireland are doing their duty?

Mr. BIRRELL

They are doing their duty as well as they can with the money at their disposal.
